Familial calcification of the basal ganglia with response to parathormone.

چکیده
Massive symmetrical calcification of the basal ganglia and dentate nuclei is now a well recognized radiological finding and great emphasis has been laid on its association with hypoparathyroidism (Lowenthal, 1948). While such an association is undeniable the connexion between the two phenomena is ill understood and cannot at present be accepted as invariable. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a family in which certain members were afflicted in middle life by a progressive neurological disorder accompanied by calcification of the basal ganglia. No clinical or chemical evidence of hypoparathyroidism was present but, in the member investigated in detail, an abnormal response to parathyroid hormone was observed.

متن کاملCalcification of the corpus stiatum and dentate nuclei occurring in a family.
Dense symmetrical calcification of the corpus striatum is rare, but of some general interest for two reasons. First, in a significant number of the reported cases this apparently degenerative condition is closely linked with a metabolic disorder, hypoparathyroidism, which may be idiopathic, parathyroprivic, or of the variety in which the parathyroid glands are histologically normal but the body...

Two related infants with microcephaly, spastic quadriplegia, and profound retardation are reported. Both showed extensive bilateral symmetrical calcification of the basal ganglia with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis.
متن کاملFamilial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (Fahr’s disease)
Familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (Fahr`s disease) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by symmetrical and bilateral calcification of the basal ganglia. Calcifications may also occur in other brain regions such as dentate nucleus, thalamus, and cerebral cortex. Both familial and non-familial cases of Fahr`s disease have been reported, predominantly with autosomal-dom...

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease of central nervous system that affects both white and gray matter. Idiopathic calcification of the basal ganglia is a rare neurodegenerative disorder of unknown cause that is characterized by sporadic or familial brain calcification. Concurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) and idiopathic basal ganglia c...
